I am trying to setup a copy of DNN for skin development on my local IIS and connect it to a local SQL server web edition (64bit)
In my SQL server manager I can connect to the SQL server witch I called "Rob" and I made a database called "DNN"
With the web platform installer I installed successfully DNN. now I run the set up and try to connect to my local SQL database.
Select SQL server 2005/2008, Server:Rob and Database DNN, use intergrated security, run as DBOwner=true. no prefix.
I tryed many variations on this but every time I get an error:
Connection Error(s):
Index #: 0
Source: .Net SqlClient Data Provider
Class: 14
Number: 18456
Message: Sql login failed

What I do wrong??
(I did succeed the setup of my production DNN installation with a remote database)

There are a lot of possible reasons, the most common for me were the permissions to the SQL Server, a few suggestions:

Make sure the server allows remote connections, allows SQL Server Authentication, there's a login in the server to use the database (different from database user). Finally, double check your connectionstring in the web.config is correct.

By using SQL Server Management Studio Express, try to login to your local server by using SQL Server Authentication to check everything is correct.

Hi,

I indeed start to beleve it's a SQL configuration problem. I have SQL 2008 R1 web server installed, Sql 2008 express and today I have downloaded and installed a new copy of SQL express. checked the SQL server configuration manager and indeed TCP/IP was not enabeld but even after enabeling it no joy!
The strange thing is that in VS I can access and work with SQL server without a problem. if I copy the connection string form a other web application in to the dotnetnuke web.config, it still fails in de setup.

Is it right that for a local SQL 2008 web editition I have to enter only a . (periode) in the server box?

george I dit not find the location where to check the "allow remote connections"and "allow SQL server Autentication"settings.
Is that also in the configuration manager?

regards and thanks so far.

Rob

Rob, I don't know about the . (periode) in the server box to connect to SQL 2008 R1 but I always use the full service name.

To check the remote connections use the SQL Server Management Studio Express and connect to the server, right-click on the server to follow this path: properties > connections > remote server connections > allow remote connections to this server (checked). I'm sure you can do it with the Surface Area Configuration tool as well but don't remember the path.

Now, I experienced the same behavior of connecting through VS but not by the application, what I did was to set the Windows user member of the SQLServer2005 (in my case) group.
