Is the SQL Server on the same machine as the web server, or a different machine?

Different server. This is an enterprise environment, not a personal set up, not a hosted situation.

So, if you're using Windows Authentication from a webserver, to a SQL Server that is elsewhere, are you using active directory as well? Is the user permissions on SQL configured properly for the user on the web server?

Taking DNN out of the equation, you should be able to connect to the SQL Server from the Web Server using the same user account as you are trying to connect with in DNN. If that doesn't work, DNN won't work.

Our security settings do not allow that service account to remote in.

I can use runas to login with the service account's profile after I have remoted in with my own account...
but... this server has SQL 2000, and the database server is SQL 2005.

If I try to open 2000 using runas, I can, however, I cannot add the <name removed> sql server.

This is the message given: "To connect to this server you must use SQL Server Management Studio or SQL Server Management Objects (SMO)"

So... ideas?

I thought prehaps I could run a .udl file from the runas to confirm the connection. But, I need to find an exe it is associated with, I have not found one (yet).

Unfortunately I can't really help much more at this point. Do you have a system admin who normally handles the DB information? If so, asking them for how to connect to the SQL Server from a remote webserver is likely your best option.
