I've tried numerous times to setup DNN 4.3.3 on my MS Business hosting plan with 1and1.  I've read other threads on this forum that express other peoples' frustrations with this process.  Now I'm a true believer that 1and1 and DotNetNuke do not play well together.

1and1 has gone to the trouble of posting an FAQ article that details installation instructions for DNN 4.3.3.  I've followed the instructions to a tee, and none of my installation attempts have been successful.  All I ever get when running DNN setup is:

The resource cannot be found.

Description: HTTP 404. The resource you are looking for (or one of its dependencies) could have been removed, had its name changed, or is temporarily unavailable.  Please review the following URL and make sure that it is spelled correctly.

Requested URL: /dnnlocation/default.aspx

I even went to the length of CALLING tech support.  That was a huge mistake.  I got connected to a rep fairly quick (5 minutes), explained my problem to him, then was on hold for 45 MINUTES with no feedback from the rep.  Eventually he came back on the line and told me he couldn't resolve the issue and was escalating it to Tier 2 support.  Wow, thanks buddy!!  I then received an email 4 DAYS LATER from tech support telling to me make sure that file is there.  Wow, do you think?  Yeah, that file's there - c'mon I'm not an idiot.  They also mentioned that I should remove FrontPage extensions.  Funny that their FAQ never makes mention of this.  So I removed the FrontPage extensions, made sure my application directory was setup correctly, blah blah blah ... all to no avail.  I still get the error you see above.

Any ideas on this one?  I think at this point I've pretty much given up hoping that DNN will run on my 1and1 hosting account.  That's a real shame.

Thanks for letting me vent a little, it was good therapy.

I have been trying for weeks, (many different installs), to get DNN working on 1and1.  Here is the last email that I got from 1and1.  This may save you the frustration of trying to get this going with them...

I apologize for the time it has taken us to get back to you. At this
moment in time DNN 4 or higher will not work correctly with our shared
servers. As my colleague said our Administrators are looking into a fix
to the current security level. However right now we can not provide an
estimated time for when we will have this fix or if we will have it.
Our current policy is that the only version of DNN that works with our
servers and has been tested is 3.0.13 . I apologize for any
inconvenience this may have caused.

I wish that I'ld read your post before I started this week. I've been through everything that you have plus!!!!

I have made progress to the point of getting the install page to execute.

My latest and hopefully last problem is this:

00:00:17.890 - Executing Additional Scripts:
00:00:17.890 -   Creating Portal: My Website
00:00:18.219 -   Error: Object reference not set to an instance of an object.
00:00:18.219 -   Portal failed to install:

If there is anyone outthere who can tell me how to solve this, I can document the steps to get here.

I have seen that in web.config there is a area trust-level. May it help changing this?

I also had a problem with 1und 1 with an application using .NET 1.1 with global.asax - all code in that file was ignored when they installed .NET 2.0. I put all code of global.asax to an other class and it worked.

I got it to install on the MS Developer from 1and1 with 4.3.4 Install Set.

Extract the files from the Install package. Now go to the main folder and make some adjustments to the web.conf file.
a. Lines 22-26: move the comment (-->) from the end of line 22 to the end of line 26.
The result should look like this:

<!-- Connection String for SQL Server 2005 Express
<add
name="SiteSqlServer"
connectionString="Data Source=.\SQLExpress;Integrated Security=True;User
Instance=True;AttachDBFilename=|DataDirectory|Database.mdf;"
providerName="System.Data.SqlClient" /> -->

b. Lines 28-33: move the comment (-->) from line 33 to the end of line 28. Change the Server,
Database, User, and Password. You can get this information from your 1&1 Control Panel. The
result should look like this:

<!-- Connection String for SQL Server 2000/2005 -->
<add
name="SiteSqlServer"
connectionString="Server=mssqlxx.1and1.com;
Database=dbxxxxxxxx;uid=dboxxxxxxxx;pwd=xxxxxxxx;"
providerName="System.Data.SqlClient" />

c. Line 108-110: move the comment (<!--) from line 108 to the beginning of line 110.
The result should look like this:

<identity impersonate="true"/>
<!-- <authentication mode="Windows">
</authentication>
-->

d. Line 115: comment out the line. The result should look like this:

<!-- <httpRuntime useFullyQualifiedRedirectUrl="true" maxRequestLength="8192" requestLengthDiskThreshold="8192"/> -->

e. Line 289: change the databaseOwner to your database username. The result should look like this:

databaseOwner="dboxxxxxxxx"/>
***Double Check Your Work****

1. Through 1and1's WebFiles create a folder to install in. \foo

2. Up load the Install files to that folder. I used FireFTP.

3. With the WebFiles, change permission on the foo folder. Do this by right clicking on the folder and selecting security. Then give Modify permissions to Network Service and IUSR_*******. Finally make sure that "Folder, subfolders adn files" is selected. Click OK

4.Now change the directory foo to an application folder. Do that by clicking on File in the menu of WebFiles. Then select Application Settings. Click create and select the foo folder. Click create.

Now type out the web address to the install. The whole address. Don't use a redirect until you know it is working. I had problems while using one. I used one after I knew the site worked.
