Vida ~

It's been a while since I looked at this particular behavior... so i may be off base.  But is there an entry in your portal alias for the IP (or name) you are using to access the site from the remote machine?  If I recall correctly, the front page of the host site will show but not work if you're addressing it incorrectly.  That is to say that if someone is able to reach your installation (even incorrectly) we default to a valid page rather than throwing an ASP.Net or other error.  At least, I recall this being true in the past.

Tell us how you are addressing the site ( the url in your browser ) and what is in your PortalAlias settings for the site.

Cheers

swillhite (mrswoop) , I don;t think you are off base at all...

In fact I think you may be on track...

I just noticed another piece of the puzzle... its not just remote users.. its anytime I use the machine name in the URL. Sorry I didn't see this earlier... but I do think I have the alias set up correctly...

To explain. My local machine is named IT_01. My dotnetnuke install is in a virtual dir called DNN4

On my local machine (IT_01) I can log into DNN just fine when I use http://localhost/dnn4/default.aspx and click the login link... which brings me to http://localhost/dnn4/Home/tabid/36/ctl/Login/Default.aspx and when I log in I get sent to http://localhost/dnn4/Home/tabid/36/Default.aspx and all is fine!

However, if , again on my local machine IT_01, I browse to http://it_01/dnn4/ and click the login link I go to http://it_01/dnn4/Home/tabid/36/ctl/Login/Default.aspx , if I then login.. I get sent to http://it_01/dnn4/Home/tabid/36/Default.aspx and I am NOT logged in! So looks like you suggest that DNN is defaulting to a valid page rather than showing an error...

so, maybe its the aliases?

Ok, so the aliases I have are:

Title Portal Aliases Users Disk Space Hosting Fee Expires
Edit this Portal My Website localhost/dnn4
it_01/dnn4
2 0 0.00

Do you think these are correct ?

Is there anyway to stop DNN from defaulting to a good page like that? I would much rather have some useful error info...

leupold,

In light of my last post there, do you still think cookies are the problem?

What settings should I have for cookies? Bearing in mind that I regularly log into dotnetnuke.com ..... would I be able to do that if the cookie settings were wrong?

Thanks

Vida

Vida,

have you tried to delete the appropriate cookie in your browser?

In IE, check the zone, the computer is in (to be seen at the bottom of the IE window. Check the cookie settings for this zone.

Those aliases look right.  But Sebastian may also be onto something.  Quite honestly, I don't work much in the virtual directory environment... I work mostly in a server environment so all my sites are real and use FQDNs ( e.g www.site.com ).

An interesting trick you might like to know about is how to fake that behavior for development purposes.  You can actually override settings on your machine so that FQDN's will go where you want them to.  If you take a look at the following file: c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts (note, no file extenstion... its a text file).  You'll see that localhost is defined for the IP address 127.0.0.1 (an internal address that just circles back to the local machine).  You could add www.microsoft.com and point it at 127.0.0.1 also... and then use that for your local testing ( if you also put it in the portalalias field).

Cheers
