I'm new to DNN. I've done the following to try it out.

1. Created on a W2003-server a new website, added a virutal dir website. Unzipped the content of the install zip in that website dir. Set the ntfs rights as described in the manual.

2. Created a new DB on sql-express DB, on the samen server

3. altered the web.config to

<connectionStrings>
    <!-- Connection String for SQL Server 2005 Express -->
    <add
      name="TEBSTAGING"
      connectionString="Data Source=.\SQLExpress;Integrated Security=True;User Instance=True;AttachDBFilename=|DataDirectory|Database.mdf;"
      providerName="System.Data.SqlClient" />
    <!-- Connection String for SQL Server 2000/2005
    <add
      name="SiteSqlServer"
      connectionString="Server=(local);Database=DotNetNuke;uid=;pwd=;"
      providerName="System.Data.SqlClient" />
   -->
  </connectionStrings>
  <appSettings>
    <!-- Connection String for SQL Server 2005 Express - kept for backwards compatability - legacy modules   -->
    <add key="TEBSTAGING" value="Data Source=.\SQLExpress;Integrated Security=True;User Instance=True;AttachDBFilename=|DataDirectory|Database.mdf;"/>
    <!-- Connection String for SQL Server 2000/2005 - kept for backwards compatability - legacy modules
    <add key="SiteSqlServer" value="Server=(local);Database=DotNetNuke;uid=;pwd=;"/>
    -->
    <add key="InstallTemplate" value="DotNetNuke.install.config" />
    <add key="AutoUpgrade" value="true" />
    <add key="InstallMemberRole" value="true" />
    <add key="ShowMissingKeys" value="false" />
    <add key="EnableWebFarmSupport" value="false" />
    <add key="EnableCachePersistence" value="false"/>
    <add key="HostHeader" value="" /><!-- Host Header to remove from URL so "www.mydomain.com/johndoe/Default.aspx" is treated as "www.mydomain.com/Default.aspx" -->
    <add key="RemoveAngleBrackets" value="false" /><!--optionally strip angle brackets on public login and registration screens-->
    <add key="PersistentCookieTimeout" value="0" /><!--use as persistent cookie expiration. Value is in minutes, and only active if a non-zero figure-->
  </appSettings>

----

When I connect to the site using : localhost/website I got the following error :

The Assembly Version ( [ASSEMBLYVERSION] ) does not match the Database Version ( [DATABASEVERSION] )

I searched the net for this error, but so far I did not found any answer for my problem.

Any suggestions ?

I had the same problem and it's taken me days to sort out but finally managed it

Here are the settings I put in to web.config to get it to conne ct to sql 2005 express

Under config settings I added this line

    <add
      name="SiteSqlServer"
      connectionString="Data Source=.\SQLExpress;Database=yourdb;User ID=username;Password=*****;Connection Timeout=5"
      providerName="System.Data.SqlClient" />

and under app settings I added

    <add key="SiteSqlServer" value="Data Source=.\SQLExpress;Database=yourdb;User ID=username;Password=*****;Connection Timeout=5"/>

and hey presto!

Thx. I already wondered why I did not had to supply a uid/pwd for the SQL Express installation.

For thos newbies who suffered the same problem. I'd like to add :

Try loging on directly on the DB (using the SQL Server Manager) to figure out if the user actually has the rights or in my case should change password at the first login.
