I am confused about the setup of a new portal in relation to a domain name. I am using a Godaddy server that can have a domain name linked to any subdirectory on the server and have multiple websites on that one server seeing that I design and host multiple sites. If my understanding is correct, setting up a new parent portal, will allow me to manage the changing information on that site (I have been able to develope new skins and see how that process works). My question is....must I first set up a subdirectory in the root and have the dns servers map to that directory before making a parent portal? Can that new subdirectory be at the same level as my dotnetnuke directory of must it be below the dotnetnuke directory?

Example of my directory structure:

root/dotnetnuke/

root/newdirectory/ assigned a domain name

So I have my domain name mapped to the ip address of the shared hosting server I am using on Godaddy....I believe the first step is done.

I see about putting that domain name as the http alias but tell me a little more about domain in relation to dotnetnuke please. Should it be at root?

Also, now that I mapped the domain to the server, I get an invalid hostname. Does dotnetnuke at like a form of a dns server withing my hosting account?

This is how I have my setup done...I have the following portals all on one DNN installation

http://portal.iowacomputergurus.com -> Parent portal

http://portal.iowacomputergurus.com/Andy -> Child Portal

http://portal.iowacomputergurus.com/Mitchel ->Child Portal

http://www.mitchelsellers.com -> Second alias of the /Mitchel child portal.

The domain registration for both portal.iowacomputergurus.com and mitchelsellers.com point to the root folder of DotNetNuke on my hosting provider.

I hope that helps.

Mitchel,

I see what your doing by setting up the different portals and I have been able to setup a child portal without a problem except that I cannot get an http alias to point to the folder...I must be doing something wrong. Here's more info:

When I make a child portal of the main dotnetnuke portal I add an additional level and the child portal works fine making the additional folder and the default.aspx file is made. If I add an additional alias (http://www.mydomain.com), should I forward the domain to the folder containing the default.aspx.....such as http://www.mycompany.com/dotnetnuke/newfolder/.......this is where I have a problem.

And number two, If I make a parent portal I have ome problems. Here's what happens.
I map the dns to the server's ip address as suggested in the dotnetnuke online documentation. The domain becomes unknown when browsing to it. I then make a parent portal with an http://www.samedomain.com and dotnetnuke does not make a folder and there is no default.aspx for the domain to go to.

Should I just be making child portal to introduce new websites:

Thanks for your help

Mitchel,

Thanks for your reply. I am still having problems getting a domain to my portal. Please bear with my while I explain.

When I mapped the domain to my shared hosting server at Goaddy, the domain was not traceable to the web. So my question is.....is it better to just forward the domain to the folder that has the default.aspx such as forwarded to http://www.mycompany.com/dotnukenet/newforlder/default.aspx

And Also,
when I make a parent portal and put i the alias (http://www.thedomain.com) dotnetnuke does not make a folder and there is no default.aspx.

Can you help me further?
