I made a change to my caching on version 4.4.1 from Moderate to No caching. That make the site crawl. I switched it back to Moderate and all hell broke loose and crashed. I restarted the server to no avail.  The failure gives me literally NO feedback at all! Can someone help me out of this mess? Pleeease!

Put this in your little bag of crisis management tricks. I went to the web site (IIS), switched it from ASP .Net 2.0 to 1.1 and saved, then put it back to 2.0 and it came back up. Caching was still set to No Caching. Put it back to moderate and all is well TG!

it sounds like you had an issue with the ASP.NET worker process needing to be recycled   You might have been able to simply stop and restart IIS to get around the error.

FYI: i've seen this before, and stopping and starting the site is not enough as theres an issue with the application pool, which runs in a different process. You need to invalidate the application pool, typically by unloading it, or by doing an IISRESET (or as you've found out, switching asp.net versions - this has this side effect as only 1 version of .net can exist in an apppool at any one point)
