I have set new registration to verified. I tested this by creating a new registration and the portal tells me to
look in my in box of the email address I entered, to get a code to first login. All fair enough. The only trouble
is I never receive the email with this code?

Have I missed setting up a mail setting somewhere? I tried the SMTP under site settings advanced as
smtp.westnet.com.au and mail.westnet.com.au, but just adding these didn't work. I don't really know if
that is required or correct. I must be missing something?

Ask your host what the requirements are to send email.  Many require authentication for sending.

Typically most hosts will require the use of a username/password combination for sending e-mail.  If you host requires this insert the values and be sure to change the authentication type to basic!
