Dear all,

I'm at the end of my knowledge what else might help to get this f... smtp connection running.

I run an DNN 4.4.0 installation on a virtual machine, w2k3 standard edition. The directory of the dnn portals are located on a second hard drive, which is compressed.

Additionally a sharepoint 3.0 service is running.

The local smtp service is up and running, allowing anonymous access as well as windows authentication a.s.o.

Configuring the Outlook Express on the same machine with the parameter: www.rill.at  as smtp server results into successfull email sendings.

I also can access an smtp server with outlook express at mail.xxxx.at smtp port 25, SSL, Authentication required, same as logging in mail server.

None of both can be  accessed by the DNN Portal, my smtp test always ends up with: Failure sending mail. Unable to connect to the remote server

I guess I've tried every combination with anonymous, basic and ntlm with ssl, w/o ssl a.s.o.

I'm looking forward to receiving a lot of helpful posts!

Thank you!

Try opening a telnet session to that mail server on port 25 using the machine that is getting the error.

It may be a firewall blocking.

Look in your event viewer for a more detailed error log message.

Thank you for the input,

telnet connected correctly, event viewer (I assume you're meaning the system integrated mmc) reports no errors on smtpsvc.

Also switching off the firewall at all doesn't change anything. (Outlook express on the same machine is always functioning properly)

so by now, no improvement!

Sorry, I was talking about the event log viewer in DotNetNuke.  Login as Host, then navigate to Admin > Event Viewer
