I'm a complete newbie so created a demo site at demo.dotnetnuke.com/myname. I got access to the home page but the default login details for the admin and host accounts don't work - I get "login failed" when I enter them.

I've used lower case for both the user id and the password, as this is exactly how they appear in the instructions on home page.

Have I missed something or are the instructions incorrect?

The default passwords are dnnadmin and dnnhost. If you used the wizard to install, did you change the passwords?

This happened to me once, sometimes your hosting provider changes the login, have you contacted them?
