Hi my name is John, and I'm quite new to dotnetnuke, especially when it's being hosted online.
I've been struggling with child portals for a couple of days now and I still can't get it to work the way I want to.
Let me explain, I've got 2 domains, domain1 and domain2. I've installed dotnetnuke in a subdirectory on domain1 and all is fine.
I then created a new child portal which was to host domain2. This meant that so far, I"ve got 2 portals one for each domain
(since the default portal will host domain1).
I then set the http alias in DNN for domain2 to
www.d2.com. Finally I pointed the url www.d2.com to domain1.com\dotnetnuke\domain2
but it doesn't work, all I get is an error "Directory Listing Denied".
If I "redirect" traffic from domain2 to domain1\dotnetnuke\domain2
it works but in the address bar of IE it shows the full URL (i.e.
www.domain1.com\dotnetnuke\domain2) which is what  I don't want
to see. I think I'm on the right path when I get the directory listing denied error but I'm not sure what I"m setting wrong.

So, if anyone has managed to get urls to point to child portals (especially with ixwebhosting), please advise me on what I could be doing
wrong!

Thank you in advance
John.

I'm not quite sure what you're doing there but it sounds like you're pointing the domains to different places in the folder structure. You should point all your domains to the same place - the root of your DNN portal. The Alias setting in the site settings for each portal or child portal will handle the routing from there. Just make sure the child portal has the domain name for the new portal listed in it.

Hi, thanks for your reply. I did what you suggested and pointed my other domain to the root of DNN and I'm still getting the same "Directory Listing Denied" error.

In IIS manager highlight the alias you setup and select properties. click on the "Documents" tab and make sure you have "default.aspx" set up as a document and that it is first in the list. If not, set it up. Also, on the properties front page make sure "Execute Permissions" is set to scripts only. Hope this helps.
