Hi,

I have DNN 4.5.5 running on windows server 2003 and SQL server 2005. Since yesterday i am seeing lots of general exceptions which regarding SMTP and my new users are experiencing long wait periods before getting the registration confirmation screen (after clicking 'Register'). Same thing i am experiencing as admin while authorizing the users.

Following is the General exception as given in event viewer, appearing over and over:

Please tell me whats the solution to this problem.

check the configuration of your SMTP server (in host settings and mail server settings) it looks like it is not responding in time, when sending out confirmation mails

Hi Sebastian,

You are right, the test email under SMTP settings is responding very slow (sometimes with 'operation timed out' and same exception as above). I am using smtp.gmail.com:587 as the smtp server. This has worked like a breeze since creation of portal, only yesterday it started throwing problems. I have no clue what went wrong.

The problem seems to have resolved. The test email is taking <10 seconds and new user registrations are also working normal. Great.. but still the question remains "What went wrong?". SMTP server at google's end?
