I am trying to figure out the email problems I am having with DNN.

Does/can DNN using different "methods" for sending out emails?

The reason why I am asking this is due to MX records & the PTR... as ours has several domains for the PTR/reverse DNS (waiting on records to update to just one).

Most email seems to work for us with DNN. But not forum notifications (except moderator accept notices), and also Nuke

In essence, there are really only two methods for sending SMTP mail.  You either send using the email commands or drop the prepared message in the SMTP pickup folder.  They are both sent out of the system using the same mechanism, and your problem appears to be after the message has left your system, being rejected as SPAM for example.  Nothing in DNN fixes anything after the message has left your system.

That said, some modules use the internal DNN mail function and some may use their own.  If there's a difference between them, you may have something to investigate.  Otherwise, check the SMTP logs to determine what might be going on.

Thanks Jeff

I've been working on this for 5 or so days full-time but still can't put my finger on it.

It is not at the mail server side, no spam is deleted outright & nothing in logs.

It is definitely on the DNN mail function side as the mail isn't getting sent out of the system. This I can see in the scheduler which also appears to be working.

I'm not sure what to investigate in the internal DNN (or module) mail function side but it is becoming clear exactly what isn't working... just not why it isn't working.

So if a new account logs in, the admin mail is sent or not sent?  And if it isn't sent and doesn't shw in the SMTP log as a connect attempt from the DNN code, or as a pickup, then check to see if the message is in the Badmail folder.  Check also to see if it's in the queue folder.  Check the DNN logs as well.
