Hello. I have a client who wants his site updated. He is currently on a Linux box. He is concerned that if we move to another box he will lose his current number one page rank on the search engines. I have pointed out that they would have the same URL and that it would just be the physical address that would change or the IP. Where can I find any more information on this topic? I would like to "prove" that the page ranking won't change. He really doesn't want to lose his ranking and I don't want to be responsible for it if there is some technicality that I am not aware of. Have you moved a physical machine that was highly ranked? Do you have any information regarding how all the major search engines handle looking at the IP or not looking at the IP when they do page ranking?

We have just changed our site to another location and there were no issues around this. Our ranking still stands.

we also changed from a php site to a dotnetnuke site. So google still has some links with index.php etc behind it and ofcourse they don't work anymore but the normal url is still on top.

Don't know about the technic detials about this, only experience.

Thanks Senthrax. I would like technical info but will take what I can get on this. It makes sense now that you mention it about the php extension and that can probably not be avoided. Hopefully the SEO improvements we will supply will outweigh these broken links. Thanks again.

Anyone else?
