I have a site with one module created for it.  In this module i have 10 forms created.

In my portal i have created pages for the forms and set them up so the menu hiearchy is correct.  On each page my module is defined and when i view the page from the admin i get the default form i created.

Then for each page i created to view the different forms i have been linking them to an external url in the page setup like this

                http://localhost/RinnMeds/tabid/61/ctl/aenursesassessment/mid/371/Default.aspx

Is this the right way to setup the pages?

I read through the module development documentation and it gets close to talking about this, but does not really lay this out in detail.

Thanks for any help.

Steven,

This is a very common module navigation technique. This technique assumes, of course, that you have registered your module with the DNN site, and in that registration you have added a reference to each user control to which you would like to navigate.  This allows you to use the navigation utilities (editurl and navigateurl) and the control key (e.g. aenursesassessment) to navigate to the proper pages.

One draw back of this technique is called Module Isolation (or Control Isolation). This means that when you specify a control on the query string (e.g. "http://localhost/mysite/tabid/500/ctl/MyControlKey/Default.aspx"):

  • the admin skin will be used
  • all other modules will be removed from the page (hence the term "isolation")

Alternatively, you could manage module navigation on your own to avoid these drawbacks. Some common ways of doing this is described on Michael Washington's DotNetNuke HELP page. A very popular alternative is the Dynamically Loaded Controls technique, Engage: Publish is a good example of a module that uses this technique.

Take care,

I also just started using a slightly different method than all of the above to get around the isolation issue for a client, and it has worked amazingly well so far.

I created a series of sub controls to handle my module display, then from my main view control, I simply show the proper view control, and call a "setup" method to ensure that the code runs.  I'll have a blog on this in a few days.
