Hello all,

Im running DNN on windows 2003.  When I try to defragment the drive with IIS and SQL server disabled, windows defragment cannot defragment the MDF file.  Does anyone know a way around this?

Thanks,

Mike

try "detaching" the database, then defrag, then "attach" the database

you may have better luck, but no guarantees

Hi Mike,

Try and see if you are able to rename the MDF file.  If there is some service out there still touching it, you will be unable to do so -- and this also means it won't defrag.

Also, what is the size of the database in proportion to your available drive space?

about equal to it.  Should I have a lot more free drive space?

Physical disk defragmentation is almost never needed. However, defraging Indexes is something that should be done to all databases. Using  DBCC SHOWCONTIG will show if you need to and the amount of fragmentation within the DB. There is a good MS post here that covers fragmentaion on SQL Server 2000 but also applies to 2005.

Also note that SQL Profiler can be a power tool to indentify SQL performance issues. This along with the SQL Tuning Advisor may do the trick for you.
