Hi. I just logged onto my portal as Host and added a new child portal but I get a 404 error when I try to browse to the child portal. I'm using DNN 3.2.2. Any ideas? Anyone? See error below.

HTTP Error 404 - File or directory not found.

How did you create it?  Using the portal or child method?

If you are working locally you need to check the child method where the full path and you just add your child name to it appears

If you just put in the name without the full portal details - eg.. portal.domain.com - and just put in portal, then it's created it but you will need to

  • log in as host
  • go to Portals
  • click the portal you created
  • down the page, click edit the alias
  • put in full details
  • click update
  • refresh

Mind you, that's only if you have that common error.

Nina, Thanks for the reply. I love your skinning work!

I'm not working locally and I used the "parent" method, when creating the portal. For the alias I used the full www.mydomain.com/portalname. The portal was created, at least it is showing in the Portals pages under Host, but I just get the error. Any ideas?

Thanks for your comments  - DNN is truly a diverse product! I love it.

Back to your issue -

You can't use that - you need a subdomain.for that -

What you are trying to do is use the child portal setup but setup as a sub domain which is in fact a parent domain.

You need to have http://subdomain.domain.com to setup parent - so either a full www or a subdomain structure

Or you need to recreate the portal using the child - and it will come up with it prefilled and you just add your portalname to the end and it will product the following - www.mydomain.com/portalname  - this  method also creates a folder in the diretory of the name you have just created. I don't like this myself, since it makes our dnn root folder structure get populated with lots of portalname folders that don't get deleted if you delete the portal itself. It also shows up the alias url -which you will also see when you use this method of portal creation.

But unless you have a wildcard entry in your DNS setting you nee to plan the parent/subdomain setup.
