I'm trying to run my DNN 4.9 install under a new (non-default) Application Pool on IIS 6 with it's own dedicated user (identity) rather than as Network Service.

Its' not working....

I gave the user all the special rights like logon as service, etc, and gave it as high as full control to the whole DNN website folder, and the C:\Windows\Temp folder.

Is there any documentation for what settings are needed for this?  Right now, after full conrtol to the website folder and to the SQL Express folder I'm finally getting as far as some Under Contruction page that says the DNN site is unavailable.  If I switch back to the Network Service Account the site runs fine again.

What settigns are needed for a custom Applicaton Pool user?  I'd rather start with revewing all needed settings than just guessing at which one I missed.  I can't seem to find this documented anywhere.

not, that if you are specifying integrated security for database login in your connection string in web.config, you need to create a sql server user and grant dbo permission to your database as well.

Here is what I normally do.

Create a new Windows group (WebApps). In your [local] security policy/user rights assignment add the group (WebApps) to the following:

  • Access Computer from Network
  • Adjust memory quotas for a process
  • Bypass traverse checking
  • Deny login through Terminal Service
  • Generate Security audits
  • Login as service
  • Replace a process level token

Then, Windows/Temp directory grant the WebApps group List folder/Read data and Delete.

Create a new user. Remove the Users role. Add the New group (WebApps) and IIS_WPG roles.

Whenever you need to add a new user/AppPool identity, just follow the last step.

Hope this helps.

This one took forever...

Tried so many things it's hard to know for sure but I think what it came down to was two things:

  • Had to grant modify permissions to the application pool user for the folder where my SQL Server 2005 express database resides
  • Had to actually do an interactive user login (via remote desktop) as the application pool user in order to have the user profile folders created for that user so SQL Express could reference it

All that plus what is listed in CSmith's post above, and also had to grant modiy writes to the dotnetnuke website folder for the application pool user.
