Does anyone have any advice about using MS SQL Server Express 2005 in a production environment?  We have been running Asp.Net 1.1 and SQL Server 2000 on an old server with 640 MB RAM.  Our provider is yanking our SQL Server 2000 license from underneath us.  We are upgrading to a new server that will have 4 GB of RAM, and will be superfast.  But I don't have $5500 for a big SQL license.  Don't know if I need it anyway...  our current 7 installations, 25 websites, and databases don't total over 250 MB in data anyway.

Any thoughts?  Advice?  Can the SQL Server 2005 Express be used this way?

Just for fun I have been running some sites on SQL Express for several months now with no issues at all. As long as the DB size stays within the limits I don't think you'll have an issue.

Give it a go, the worst case is you need to upgrade.

Has there been any issues with the SQL Express starting up?  I thought I read somewhere that the SQL Express server and associated services need to be manually restarted.  I have a company that maintains our server and my concern was the websites running smoothly after a reboot or windows udpate, etc.

Has not been an issue for me. I can't say I recall the exact installation process, but no problems on reboots and updates on a win2003 server.
