I am getting frustrated at the lack of samples on how to do things. anyhow, I am trying to build my own module that does 1 sql select and will display the data. nothing else, just a simple sql call and put the value into a variable in the code behind. Is there not a simple way to do this?

I tried the ThingsForSale sample but there seems to be way too much in there that I have to take out and I cant seem to do it properly.

See adefwebserver.com for all kinds of tutorials, examples, etc.

Doug-
I'm sure you're probably trying to start with a super-simple module and then go from there to coding more complex modules.  I'll second the suggestion about adefwebserver having good starter tutorials for module creation.  Michael Washington (adefwebserver) also has a blog here on DotNetNuke.com:  http://www.dotnetnuke.com/Community/Blogs/tabid/825/BlogID/77/Default.aspx

With regards to just executing a SQL query and returning results, you can do that with the REPORT module as well as with several free third-party modules.  Picking apart code from such modules could be helpful.

I have often used the free (and free source code) module "AdvancedDatagrid":
