I created a new User Profile Property with the List type... but when adding the first item I missed the Custom Sort Order check box.  I've not been able to find any easy way to change this now.

Deleting items doesn't work - the custom sort order check box doesn't appear.

Deleting the profile property doesn't work - when recreating it the old one is used, and again the check box doesn't appear.

Deleting relevant items from the ProfilePropertyDefinition and List tables - new profile property appears available, but yet again the check box doesn't appear.

The only thing I've managed to do to get the checkbox to reappear is to create a profile property with a different name - something I don't want to do as not only is it the name I want to use, but on our development instance I've customised some things that use this profile name.

Is there no way a simple missed checkbox can be sorted?
