Ran into an interesting situation today.

Tried to setup some security using existing roles from an older DNN installation.  Security roles in the past were allowed to contain the chacter > ' <

In the most recent, non-beta release of DNN 5, this is no longer allowed.  However, old security roles cannot be modified out of the box via DNN's built-in controls.  So, when trying to setup security for a newly installed module, I get an errror if I want to use existing security roles (that have a good many users in them).

Any ideas on how to work through this, w/out rebuilding my security model?

Chad,

Two things here, first of all can you please log this as an issue in Gemini (support.dotnetnuke.com) so that it can be addressed.

Secondly, to fix your issue, you might be able to rename the role, in the database via the "Roles" table to remove the character that isn't allowed.

Thanks Mitch, I will log the issue... will give a go at the change directly in the database.

Oh yeah...also when doing this, you will want to re-start the application after you make the DB changes.
