I set the SMTP settings and sucessfully sent an email. Update, then logout and click login. Now trying to login as host gives me this error:

A critical error has occurred.
Object reference not set to an instance of an object.

Any ideas?

TIA - Tony

try to login as admin and review the sitelog (or sitelog table in database) for details of the error.

You should have done something else to your site, the smtp setting would not affect the user login.. if not, you can check the windows error log and see if help.
