Here is a link to Mitchel Sellers blog providing installation instructions:

http://www.mitchelsellers.com/blogs/articletype/articleview/articleid/294.aspx

Although that was written for DNN 4.9.0 and DNN 5.0.0, the same instruction will apply to the latest versions currently released DNN 4.09.04 and 5.01.01. I would expect that you will be doing a local install. Instructions are also provided for a remote install although many shared hosting providers make a one-click install of DNN available, although it is often not the most recent version.

Use the Install version of either DNN 4.09.04 available here:
http://dotnetnuke.codeplex.com/Release/ProjectReleases.aspx?ReleaseId=27627

or version DNN 5.01.01 available here:
http://dotnetnuke.codeplex.com/Release/ProjectReleases.aspx?ReleaseId=30778

You'll find links to all of the versions as well as the most recent core module packages and additional installation instructions and an Admin Guide here:
http://www.dotnetnuke.com/Development/Downloads/tabid/125/Default.aspx

For your first exposure to DNN, I would recommend the Install package for version 5.01.01. I DO NOT recommend the starter kit or source versions.

The admin guide is unobtainable using the download page on the site :( It asks me for an endless series of marketing information, one new question per page, but never actually gets to giving me the admin guide. EXTREMELY frustrating. Is there anywhere that the admin guide is actually available?

sorry for any inconvenience. btw. if you are going to install DNN on your own server with local or remote desktop access, the easiest option to install is using Microsoft Web Platform Installer, you may download from www.microsoft.com/web.
