we have a live website and a development website and the two are getting out of sync. Firstly, today we are getting an error on our development site when we are trying to access system screens such as Module Definitions and User Accounts. The error details are:-

Error: System.NullReferenceException: Object reference not set to an instance of an object.

Source Error:

An unhandled exception was generated during the execution of the current web request. Information regarding the origin and location of the exception can be identified using the exception stack trace below.

Stack Trace:

[NullReferenceException: Object reference not set to an instance of an object.]
   DotNetNuke.Entities.Portals.PortalSettings.GetPortalSettings(Int32 TabId, PortalAliasInfo objPortalAliasInfo) +101
   DotNetNuke.Entities.Portals.PortalSettings..ctor(Int32 tabId, PortalAliasInfo objPortalAliasInfo) +76
   DotNetNuke.HttpModules.UrlRewriteModule.OnBeginRequest(Object s, EventArgs e) +3394
   System.Web.SyncEventExecutionStep.System.Web.HttpApplication.IExecutionStep.Execute() +68
   System.Web.HttpApplication.ExecuteStep(IExecutionStep step, Boolean& completedSynchronously) +75

Can you please tell us how we can rectify this as obviously the system screens play a major part in maintaining our development site.

Secondly, is it possible to replicate our live site by copying the live folder and corresponding SQL database? Is making a duplicate of a DNN website a complicated exercise or is it fairly straightforward? Either way we need to resolve this as development is now at a standstill.

Since our last entry, we have managed to produce a copy of our live website by copying the live database as well as the live folder and routing the development url to the new folder. The strange thing is that even though the sql table and folder work fine under the live url, we get the same issues when using the development url on the same data. We then tried using different url's and get the same problem.

The development website now mirrors our live website and works fine in the same way. we can make changes to the development site without affecting the live site. However, the dnn part of the development site still suffers from the same problem which makes it almost impossible to use. Namely, when trying to access modules or users or any other part of the dnn system we get the same error as listed earlier. We have an Intranet site using dnn which remains unaffected.

Please can you help us try and shed some light on this. Could it be anything to do with the Internet Explorer upgrade?

Many Thanks
