My company has recently decided to find a better way to organize the content on our dnn site.  Any files provided for download (such as PDFs and XLSs) are going to be stored on a seperate file server and accessed by DNN through a virtual directory in IIS.  I have found an awesome looking module (http://www.snowcovered.com/Snowcovered2/Default.aspx?tabid=242&PackageID=14988) to list the contents of a folder.  This will help us provide greater flexibility by allowing our users to add files on the file server and they automatically appear in DNN.  Here is my setup:

I have added a virtual directory in IIS under the portal root directory:
\\DNNserver\dnn_website_root\portals\1\VirtualDirectory

That virtual directory points to a remote server:
\\FileServer\file_share\dnn_website_files

if I browse to www.myDNNsite.com/portals/1/VirtualDirectory/index.html everything looks fine.  The issue I am having is getting the file manager to recognize the virtual directory.  The reason for having to do it this way is that the module that I referenced above, doesn't appear to allow for entering a UNC path to a directory, rather it has a drop down list of the folders on the site.

Thanks for the help!

i am affraid this functionality is not supported, since DotNetnuke only looks at the physical file system, not at virtual files.

as i see it you have 2 options:

  • create a custom module that allows for showing files in unc paths
  • use some kind of file replication to replicate files in the unc path to a physical folder in the dnn file system
