I have noticed that when my users registered for my site, they were being added as Registered Users and Subscribers.  Can someone tell me where I can change this?

registered users is a required role, you shouldn't touch

Subscribers is set up to demonstrate newsletter subscription feature. the role is set up to be auto assigned (so any new member will automatically subscribed) and public, allowing users to manage membership themselves in the services section of their user profile.
