Hi all,

Sorry if this has been discussed previously here.  I couldn't return anything in the search.

I read an article on one of the DNN hosting sites, and they recommend not using the single install, multiple portal approach for multiple reasons.  Some of which are scalability and reliability.  If a portal gets hosed somehow, the only fall back is to do a db restore and all the portals are forced to restore.

What is the current thinking on this?  Any best practice advice?

Thanks,
Troy

it depends on the needs of the portals - of course, the article is right, that it is not possible to restore a different state per portal, but on the other hand, if you host up to 50-100 simple portals in a single DNN installation, you may offer it fully managed for a very low price (due to few maintenance costs), where your customers can live with this limitation.

Sebastian,
Thanks for the info.  I'm relatively new to DNN, so what I'm looking for is the likelyhood of problems in the portal approach.  How many people out there have had a portal get corrupted, and required them to restore the entire database and rolling back all the other portals?  Is this a common problem, or quite rare?

Troy, if a database gets corrupted, all portals will be affected. The request to restore a portal backup usually arises due to an issue on the other side of the keyboard (i.e. a portal editor deleting content accidently).
