When we first went live with DNN we imported a large group of users.  Our system we came from only had usernames so we made the first/last name the same as the user name.  i.e. my username here is miken and on my site I would have:

Username: miken
display name: miken
first name: miken
last name: miken

In hindsight this was a bad move.  Some modules show first and last name which is 'miken miken' and it just looks bad.  So we're trying to clean up.  One option we found was to make the names required, force users to have a valid profile when they login, then run a query to delete ALL first/last names in the DB.  It seems like it will work in our tests, and we could write the query to only erase the names if they match.  But, what happens if a module is looking for the first name of a user and it's now blank?  It might break things...

Is there a better way to do this?

most modules require either user name, display name or first name and last name. I suggest to clear first name, set it to be required and make sure, profile needs to be valid for login, i.e. users have to fill in proper first name on next visit.
