How do I edit the top level  and bottom level of the page,  I mean the area above the menu bar and beside the Logo.  I know it is not called Master Page, but that would be the name in Visual Studio.

I would like add some info there , plus move the search bar up to that area and also move the Register | Login are up to that section.

Thank you

you need to modify the skin file applied to the page. usually the source file is located either in /portals/_default/skins/skinpackname/skinname.ascx or /portals/0/skins/skinpackname/skinname.ascx

If you're using the default skins in DNN the skins would be located in /portals/_default/skins/minimalextropy/ and likely the Index.ascx file in there.

Are there any good reference books on how to modify the Index page for a skin?

I use Visual Studio 2008 to edit the Index.ascx page and it is the right one to modify, but it is difficult to modify without causing a DotNetNukke error saying “An error has occurred”  with NO HELP.   The only way to fix it is just restore a backup of Index.ascx.

When I edit Index.ascx in VS 2008 In the design view everything says "Error creating control, Cannot find web project item W:\websites\lifestyle\index.acsx"

another (often more suitable) option than modifying index.ascx is modifying index.html and use parse option in admin :: Skins, which creates .ascx file from .html. HTH
