DNN Hack  Modified By Mark McQuaid on 12/10/2010 5:29:48 PM
One of my customers just emailed me a youtube video showing how to gain host user access to a DNN site. I'm using DNN 4.9.5. I have a couple of questions:
1) Is the video legitimate?
2) Are there any security/hack vulnerabilities that i should be aware of?
3) If there are vulnerabilities, where can i find instructions on plugging the holes?

if you applied latest security updates for windows and .net, you should be (quite) secure against attacks using windows venerability. /// if you are using latest version of other server software and use known products, this should be no issue as well. /// if you have ftp installed, you have to take care using secure passwords only. /// DNN 4.9.5 should be no issue, if you did not modify the source code /// If you use secure extensions (providers, modules, skins), this shouldn't be a problem eitherö

Sebastian,

Thank you for your quick reply. We keep our servers up to date, however, i have not installed the latest version of .net (4).

The video I referred to is http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yghiC_U2RaM which uses the latest ASP version.

Would you please put my worries to ease and confirm that I am safe from this?

Mark, the video is well known, it demonstrates using a "padding oracle vulnerability" of .Net encryption used to hack a site running DotNetNuke (on ASP.net). This was a severe problem for the .net team at Microsoft (in fact, I can't remember any other weekend, noticing members of the .net team at Microsoft to replied immediately to MVP questions and suggestions, as they were working hard to reproduce and fix it). You may read further details on the blog of MS VP Scott Gutthrie: http://weblogs.asp.net/scottgu/archive/2010/09/18/important-asp-net-security-vulnerability.aspx
