Under host I have the enable online users ticked and also under schedule the online members event is active. However under both the users online module and active forums (AF) it does not report any users online except 0. However AF does report logged in members (but still report anon users as 0) but the users online module reports both as 0. Any help appreciated.

Using DNN 5.6.1 and users online module 5.01 and latest AF module

Check the following:

In Module Settings:
  1. Module status is OK
    1. If Module is not "OK" go to Host >> Host Settings >> Other Settings
    2. Make sure "Enable Users Online? is CHECKED
  2. Show Membership is CHECKED
  3. Show people online is CHECKED
In HOST Menu:

  1. Go to Schedule
  2. Check "Purge Users Online" is ENABLED, and frequency is set to 1 minute.
Also in Host >> Host Settings>> Other Settings>> if your site log storage is set to File System, change it to Database and see if that work for you, set "Scheduler Mode" to "Timer Method"

Hope this will help.

Thank you so much for your tips, I did everything you suggested, module status says its ok yet online users/visitors still show up as 0 and no listing of members online either. On a side note I use Activeforums and its own listing of members online works fine yet visitors still has the issue of 0 online. I asked the dev of AF and he stated they use a different method not DNN's to find users online, however they use the DNN method of visitors online. Hence why their user online list is correct yet the visitors online is always 0.

Is this a database issue possibly?

I don't think its database problem, it maybe that your scheduler is not working properly, lets check the following, step-by-step.

STEP 1
Check in your web.config file that following lines are not commented out.

1-
 <!--<add name="UsersOnline" type="DotNetNuke.HttpModules.UsersOnline.UsersOnlineModule, DotNetNuke.HttpModules" preCondition="managedHandler" />-->

2-
<!-- <add name="UsersOnline" type="DotNetNuke.HttpModules.UsersOnline.UsersOnlineModule, DotNetNuke.HttpModules" /> -->

If the above lines in web.config are comment out, uncomment them and save the web.config File.

STEP 2
Do this ONLY if STEP 1 did not solved the problem for you.

In HOST Menu:

  1. Go to Schedule
  2. DISABLE  "Purge Users Online" and Update
  3. Go back to Schedule and ENABLED "Purge Users Online" update
  4. Go to Host >> Host Settings >> Restart Application..
Good Luck
