We have a site using DNN 5.6.1 but is REALLY SLOW. The target framework  for our site is ASP.NET 3.5 and it is using v2.0 runtime in IIS. Could this be cauing the site to be slow?

Unlikely to be the issue. I have run 5.6.1 in asp.net 2.0 without problem.

For a slow site, there are a lot of places to look.

First, check out the site using a performance checking tool like YSlow for Firefox. This will let you know if any particular item is slowing things down. Don't fret about stuff like 'too many javascript files' or things like that - what you're looking for is perhaps a lot of 404 errors, or a very large image file being downloaded, or a key file taking a long time to connect and download.

Next, if you determine it is the page-build time of the DNN page, then something in DNN is running slow. Check the amount of memory available on the server - if it has insufficient memory or CPU then this will cause slow performance. If this is not an issue test to see whether or not it is a particular page, or all pages in the site.

Also check the event log of the server- if you have a lot of errors occuring (perhaps from a failing scheduled item or similar) this might be slowing the site down.

Determining the cause of slow performance is just a gradual process of elimination. Keep working through the most obvious causes. Bear in mind it may not be one thing that fixes the issue, but a combination of small improvements that unlocks better performance.

Check in your host settings for performance settings option. I remember one time I had it set to No Caching, and the site was just slow. As bare minimum keep it to Light if not moderate or heavy.
