I have 800+ regular users who, to hear them talk, each has a different OS, different browser and for those of them that know the difference, different plug-ins in their browsers. My most consistent complaint is that they don't see the "drop-downs", meaning the sub-menus from the Menu bar Tabs across the core portal (5.6.3). I also have a module admin who doesn't see the little triangles at the extreme left of the module so they can't get to that drop down either.

My question is what is it they don't have, client side, that they need? It doesn't appear to be Java, but could it be the "framework" stuff? And can a Mac or Linux user download that to run in their background if the framework is the issue? I have a user running Win7 Pro, with the latest IE all of it "current" with high-priority updates through MSUpdate whom I just spoke to. He doesn't know what "optional" software he may or may not have downloaded from the MS Update site.

Thanks for any guidance on this. I usually hear more complaints frpm my Mac/Safari or Linux users, but this one guy is a module admin for my site's FAQs and I really need to get him fully functional.

IE9 is close to being the work of the devil - to get it working they must make sure they are NOT in compatibility mode.
For the rest - tell them all to use chrome or firefox - they work perfectly on pretty much all platforms.

if your skin is IE9 complient, you should make sure to tell it the browser, please read http://blogs.msdn.com/b/ie/archive/2010/06/16/ie-s-compatibility-features-for-site-developers.aspx

The site uses a well known 3rd party skin which is available through snowcovered and was created in the UK. It is VERY popular due to its ability to be customized.  I have no idea how or where in a DNN portal to tell it the browser, and the whole issue is that I have users running Windows, Mac OS and Linux, and using over a dozen different browsers.  I am looking for what the DNN portal uses to provide things like the mouse over dropdown menu's (some of my users never see them) and the admin drop downs from the upper left corner triangle.

Dnn uses a variety of diffent css and layout techniques to handle things like menus.

Depending on a lot of different factors exactly which of these techniques any skin uses may vary.

Skin creators can select from a wide range of different menu providers and skin formatting styles
 - also the actual makeup of the skin itself can vary greatly.

Without seeing the skin and knowing details like which version of dnn the list is running on - its hard to tell you much more than that.

The same goes for details such asL
 - which MENU provider system does the skin utilize.
 - Is the skin DIV based with CSS layout or HTML TABLE based.
 - Does the skin include any custom scripting or dynamics techniques.

All of these factors can greatly effect the ability for any given web browser to render a web page.

For example, dnn 5.6.x uses a number of telerik based tools provide functions like the html editor in addition to many layout and functionality features.  But the arrival of internet explorer 9 caused a myriad of problems for telerik . . . and it was not till dnn 5.6.3 that a version of the telerik runtime was available that dealt with many of the ie9 issue -- in this case if you did you UPGRADE dnn to the latest version then your sites would not have access to the fixes provided by telerik to deal with ie9.
