there are a couple of modules for a reasonable price on snoowcovered.com, providing this function.

I rather interact with the user information either directly or through the DNN API rather than buying a module.
Had a hard time finding a lead on how to do this however.
Could anyone point the way?

I'm going to be doing a big import soon, but the data are diverse and complex enough that I think I'm going to write a separate module just to do it.

I think it's best to use the DNN framework to make sure the data are valid in the tables. So, I figure I'll write my module to read the text files I'll output from the old system, and have it create accounts with the user controller.
