I have been  wrestling with establishing a localhost copy of my live site.  I've fought through a number of problems working with IIS 7.5 under Windows 7 Pro thanks to much help and advice from contributors on this forum.  I'm close to success (I  think).

Now when I attempt to browse to the restored site (localhost/BIUSABkUp) I'm getting a generic DotNetNuke Community page with the message "This site is currently Unavailable.  Please check back later."

I'm sure how to proceed with trouble shooting this problem.  Are there any suggestions?  Any logs I can examine?  Settings I should check?

Thanls

Al.

I just noticed that the browser URL changes and appends /Install.UnderConstruction.htm to the localhost/BIUSABkup value that I originally enter. It;s obviously a clue but what's it mean>

That would be the expected behavior if DotNetNuke is unable to connect to it's database. Double check that you can connect to the database using a tool such as MS Sql Server Management Studio and the same server, database name, and user credentials that are being used in your modified connection strings (2) in the site's web.config.

If that does not help you spot the problem, please describe the procedure used to migrate the database from production to localhost as well as posting to this thread the <connectionStrings> and <appSettings> sections from web.config. Please replace any database username and password information with xxxx when posting this information.

Thanks Bill, you nailed it. Your message focused my attention on the web.config Connection String where I found a silly error. I had transposed database name and uid in one of the strings. As soon as I spotted and corrected that error, my localhost connection succeeded.
Incidentally, your checklist of 6 things to do when moving a site to localhost had helped me earlier in my restore efforts. I had for gotten about PortalAlias.
Great support; terrific detail and clarity. Thanks again.

(BTW, a handsome friend with you in the photo! Breed? Name?)

I'm glad you solved that issue, Al. It's easy to overlook the small details and helps to have a second pair of eyes or a checklist to find the error.

My profile picture companion is "Duke" a (now) 5 year old male golden retriever who is lying by my feet as I type this reply.
