I am using IE9 and Firefox12 and my html module editor in Dotnetnuke v5.6.3 is behaving eratically - I had to download Chrome browser yesterday to insert an image in an html module !

Other elements of DNN module admin didn't work so well in Chrome so I ended up having to part edit in Chrome and then finish off changes in Firefox - hardly ideal !

I understand I can upgrade the FckEditor without doing a full DNN upgrade at the moment.

I am a reasonably technically savvy layperson but how do I complete this editor upgrade so I can manage/update my site in either IE or Firefox ?

Any help/advice  would be greatly appreciated.

Just install Ckeditor and drop that outdated module.

CK Editor is the successor to FCK, download it from CodePlex http://dnnckeditor.codeplex.com/ and read the Read Me file included, you will need to use the correct version for your site.
