I recently has a situation where my development/staging site was indexed by Google. This has never occurred before so I was pretty surprised. Basically when we build a site we stage it on our production sever to finish off skin development and build out the structure. We use a sub-domain like dev.whateverthedomainis.com and once the site is ready for go-live we switch to live domain. In site alias setting we either delete the sub -domain alias or set it to redirect to default.

My question is how do I best prevent search spiders from indexing the staging site? And what is the best approach for handling the alias?

Thank very much,

I use a Robots file - e.g test.pokerdiy.com/robots.txt

Actually, this sums it up nicely: http://mitchelsellers.com/blogs/2012/...

Better idea is to disable anonymous authentication in IIS and run the dev site under Basic Auth. It puts a simple challenge response box up for people to log in to view the dev site, without having to have individual page permissions set. You can have individual portals under Basic while others in the same installation are public as well.
