I am working on a setup that has 3 portals and 16 different cultures active.  I am no longer able to update or create pages in 1 of the 3 portals (the other 2 work fine).  When I try to create a new page or update an existing page (for instance, update the skin) the ajax window runs for 30 seconds and then disappears, it continues to process the request in the background and then 30 seconds or so later I get a page that says "Service Unavailable - The service is temporarily unavailable. Please try again later."  That portal then stays locked up for a while and I continue to receive that Service Unavailable page but the other portals continue to work correctly.  Once the portal is accessible again a few minutes later, I can see that the change I made to the page was not saved. 

I have tried increasing the shutdownTimeout and executionTimeout values in the web.config but that didn't seem to do anything.

We are on version 7.3.1. 

Any ideas?

Usually the "Service Unavailable" message means that the Application Pool was shut down because of too many errors. It's odd that one of your portals continues to work though. Did you set up your portals to each run in different websites / application pools? At any rate, what errors do you get in your event log?

Thanks for the response Erik. The site (all portals) are set up using 1 App Pool and as 1 Website in IIS. There are no new errors that show up in the EventLog table when this occurs.

An update on this one - It looks like the culprit was the number of records in the PortalAlias table for that Portal. We had 64k records. I moved those to a different protal temporarily and everything start working fine. Has anyone else experienced this behavior?

Layne,

When logged in as Host, check Admin>Site Settings>Portal Alias. Make sure Auto Add Site Alias is turned off if you don't specifically need it.

Spammers are probably hitting your site's IP and generating additional Portal Aliases.
