Super users are allowed in all portals, so they don't get logged out if the portal can't be determined.

Don't use this as an excuse to make all your admins Super Users though

Unfortunately, my superusers get logged off too.

I've read about the moduleid/portalid querystring thing but the logging out happens even when using core modules.  It's not just a third party module thing.  It's a DNN thing.

I finally found this thread which is REALLY good (except it doesn't have a fix): http://dotnetnuke.com/Community/ForumsDotNetNuke/tabid/795/mid/2108/threadid/27037/threadpage/18/scope/posts/Default.aspx#57075

I would guess that there are many more users having this problem.

It's a show stopper for my site so I hope it gets fixed!

I'm too poor for anything other than the community version

Hi John, I'm convinced that you have the knowlege to solve this one.  Similar information has been discussed here:

http://forums.asp.net/1116041/ShowPost.aspx

Going on that thread I've confirmed that Firefox does not cause the logout but IE7 does.  However, I notice that when I log in as admin on Firefox and go to the Skins selection page, the image links are broken.  Is it possible that the whole thing is caused by the child portal not having permission on images that are stored on the "_default" portal?

Your help is much appreciated.  I've sunk about 24 hours into this.

UPDATE: After doing more experimentation I had success and I'm convinced that the key factor in getting rid of this problem was not the software update to 4.3.7.  Rather, it appears that DNN does not like to support child portals if your main installation is in the root IIS site (www.example.com) rather than a virtual directory (www.example.com/dnn ) as the DNN documentation instructs.
