Correct me if I am wrong, but there is a lot more info on skinning the SOLPARTMENU than there is the DNNMenu. Since the DNNMenu is now the default for all new DNN installations and it has some nice new features where can I find more information about it? I already know and use Jon Henning's page regarding information about the methodology behind the menu and notes on the differences between this menu and SOLPART but I cannot seem to find examples or documenation on how to use the menu itself.

I am accustomed to skinning a site using html, xml, and css files so anything along those lines would be great.

Also, for people who are using this menu, is the DNNMenu more cross-platform compatible? I am not asking if it's perfect, but SOLPARTMENU is definetly a little harder to skin for multiple browsers than the rest of the DNN system.

Thank you for your time.

Chris

Professional skinners still have to use SolpartMenu to create their skins as the packaged skins are bought by end users that could be using it on a 3.x or earlier 4.x portals.

DNNMenu is lighter and has less overhead than Solpart, But Solpart is well documented and also good solid examples are made so professional skinners are reluctant to jump into the deep end and experiment yet.

SalarO has made a conservative decision to  only developer DNNMenu on custom skins if it is asked. Otherwise we still prefer to use Solpart as we understand it well and know its limitations.

We feel that it will indeed take at least 4-6 month before enough research is done internally to ensure it is solid enough to be used on customer sites.

This is indeed a catch 22 as without early adaptors we would not know the limitations or we would not build enough knowledge base to create solid menus as packaged skins. But from our perspective, the fact that the numbers of users on legacy DNN is much larger than DNNMENU enabled is forcing us to invest more time in SolpartMenu or third party menu like Telerik. This will change in 4-6 months time.

That's good to know. Maybe other factors were driving the decision to switch but it would have been nice to have the documentation on the DNNMenu before the decision was made to switch it as the default.

Time heals everything, as you pointed out, so this is another one of those "wait and see" situations.

Thanks for the reply.

Salar is right - the response to the DNN Nav menu probably isn't what the core team direction has hoped for, more people use the solpart menu, but partly that's becuase it's 'safe' - it came out of the box and has been that way for years, the menu itself has been updated, and in the process along the way - I think there was an attempt to do things with a menu that didn't use up as many resources, and, could be used without tables.  The DNN Menu when rendered in a horizontal method, doesn't use tables.

But further than that, we've seen much more growth in the area of menu development, from the Rad menus provided by telerik, through to the CSS menus like the house menu and there is the 360 one on snowcovered and John Mitchell's CSS Menu too. These solutions use CSS only and are more 'true' navigational options that are in keeping with other technologies.

I did what I could with the limited resources and no doubt you've probably already seen this - http://www.skincovered.com/dnn-menu.aspx  and this - http://www.ninasfreeskins.com/xdnnlight/home.aspx which is a free skin using the nav menu.

I have tried very hard over the few short years of DNN to provide a few solid, well structured free skins and information to make the journey of skinning more accessible, and I know it's not much in the whole scope of things by comparison to module developers and code out there, and I wish I could do more with the resources I have, but it's often a matter of taking small steps at a time and trying things out.  Armed with the skinning documentation and some free skins, you should be able to grasp a basic understanding and then move forward from that.

The DNN Nav Menu is ok - I don't know why it was put in except some move forward in some way - who knows, but to date, I don't see any commercial skins coming out with it at the moment, and I can tell you from my experience, I was never able to make it do what it should do.

That's just my thought on this - I've done alot of projects, in the hundreds now and have never been asked about using the DNN Nav menu.  My clients just want it to work, look good and be easy to install, and I'm sure that Salar would also agree, there are things we just don't put into skins because they aren't used or called for.

If I were you I'd stick to solpart menu, or look at third party options for a solution.

Hope this helps you too.

Just further clarifications.

Probably J.Henning is best to comment. But I agree with the decision to replace Solpart with DNNMenu.

Solpartmenu has been around for a long time. Some of its dependencies goes a long way back to set of browsers that no longer exists. As the result of that it has grown too large. A Dinosaur that needs a more nimble and lighter replacement to reflect the needs of today browsers on both PC and Mac platform.

This is the right  time to develop a more modern lighter Menu that is forward thinking.

DNNmenu fits the bill. It is just naturally it is young and it needs nurturing and possible bug fixing that will not happen overnight.

I am sure it will be there in 4-6 months time. In the mean time if you feel you have the time and bandwidth to have a go then please do. You will be ahead of the game.
