Hi,  i am relatively new to all of this and I want to try and change the bar that runs accross the top of the website (i am not sure what it is actually called but it is the part which displays your chosen logo in the top left and appears on every page). How do i go about designing and using my own one or perhaps using one found in another skin. Is it possible to change only this part easilly, i have no experience in skinning.

Thanks a lot
                   Sam.

Its not too complicated.  You will need to learn the basics of skinning though.  Luckily i have a spare 10 minutes.

1. You need to find the location of your skin files

Go here \DotNetNuke\src\Website\Portals\_default\Skins\DNN-Blue and copy that folder (DNN-Blue) to this new location: C:\Work\Frameworks\DotNetNuke\src\Website\Portals\0\Skins\DNN-Blue.  The number is your dnn portal (you can have lots).  By doing this you can make changes to the DNN-Blue skin but still have the default unchanged one for all your other portals.

2. Ok so you've done that now go into the copied folder and find Vertical Menu - Fixed Width.ascx.  If you open that up it contains all the layout info for your site (if you chose that layout in the dnn skin settings). If you find somewhere in there thats where your banner is placed when its compiled and presented to the user.

3. You may notice that is held within a table ie

.  Its class is skinheader so if you now open skin.css and find skinheader, there you can change certain aspects of how it looks.

I'm quite new to this myself but its not that complicated if you do your reading.  Goodluck

missed an important part out there:

If you find dnn:BANNER runat="server" id="dnnBANNER"  somewhere in there thats where your banner is placed when its compiled and presented to the user.
