Hello Bryan

While I was researching DNN skinning to make my own skin work, I discovered using FireBug that DNN skins dynamically change the class attribut of the menu elements (usually DIVs) to display what kind of element it is., and yes that seems to overwrite whatever style already applied to the element. In my case, I had some styles from my previous ASP .Net site put on the tables that simply "vanished" because the menu changed the class and inherited some other styles :) Check it out in FireFox with Firebug yourself to see the order in which your styles are applied.

That's why you can set a skin to use a specific class element like .m1-0 or .bc and not worry about which style is already applied to the specific site since it's getting overwritten by the DNN menu skin css class. I would recommend converting your theme to a DNN skin using the DNN 5.x skinning guide pdf. If you want to keep the LINQ theme, then ask Timo in another thread since that's way out of skinning topic ;)

Timo I hope you'll correct any mis-asumptions I may have made, I just thought that I'd share what I've experienced to help out :)

/Rune

Hi Rune,

Thanks for posting. You are right, there is one thing I would like to add (just for reference).
What you see (the menu changes the classes dynamically) is the behaviour of the default menu.
(DNN NAV).

There are other third party menus skin objects you can use that have static HTML and classes.

If your going to incorporate Telerik controls into DNN you should at least keep the skins consistent. Tags dnn:DnnComboBox is Simple, RibbonBar is Default or Office 2003, dnn:DnnWindow is Black, and you cannot change Skins on any of the above, thought the control with Skin Manager which would be the most logical. SkinManager, InputManager or FormManager do change anything dnn:Dnn…… related. Tried setting skin attributes in the web.config = no change and why not? No dnn:DnnTextBoxes in the Control Panel RibbonBar with the dnn:DnnComboBoxes so we could have consistency in Styling, same with settings tags control, a asp:TextBox then a dnn:DnnComboBox.

Hi Everyone,

I'm desperately trying to find information on how we are supposed to create skins with DNN 5 as I find documentation very, very slim on the ground. I'm looking to evaluate this CMS option for our corporation but our .NET designers will want to build their own interface from scratch and not buy in a pre-defined skin.

Why is it so difficult to find such information? I can see links to courses from this site but who wants to spend $999 dollars to learn how to do something that should be straight forward for .NET web designers and moreover should be readily promoted to prospective customers? Offering a CMS system on the basis that most serious commercial users are going to buy skins off the shelf is not what we would want to do.

I found old documentation on skinning going back to Version 3. I've also found some websites that want you to pay to view tutorials. Surely this information should be freely available if you want to promote DNN?

The many, many CMS reviews I've read all say it's a powerful system but difficult to climb the learning curve. This is proving so difficult to get into when we can't even find the documentation.

Please can someone help with some pointers as to where I can easily learn how to create DNN 5 skins.

Regards,

Mark
