I want to make another skin and container folder and copy the contents of other theme.  Then make modifications to it.  It this possible without any problems?

That should work, just be sure to rename the folder right away. Also you might want to add a new Extension definition on the Extensions page, but it will likely work fine without having the extension information defined. This is only the case for Skins and Containers, not other types of extensions such as modules.
