We are having issues with our display of our menu bar. Different things with different browsers at different times...

Per DNN support, the issue seems to be with the CSS style in our custom skin, which we purchased on Snowcovered.

I am a DNN novice, so I'm hoping someone can point me in the right direction. Is this something I can fix, or is it an issue that has to be taken care of through the skin designer. I have contacted them, as well, but per reviews on Snowcoverd, they do not seem to be real responsive.

Thanks so much!

It is hard to help if you dont give us a live URL.

Maybe its a old skin, if so  try to set the fallback skin doctype in Host Settings.

Thanks for the reply. The url is www.phaseivengr.com . The thing is that this issue comes and goes - sometimes it loads right, sometimes it doesn't. Right now the "public" view seems to be loadiing ok. When it doesn't load right, the blue horizontal menu at the top loads with just a blue square at the left margin. However, when I am logged in as admin or host, in Firefox and Safari, but not IE, the DNN menu "overlaps" the web page, so it's unusable - clicks go on our website, not the DNN commands - does this make sense? Is there a way I can upload  screen shots?

It is an old skin, but I checked the Host Settings, and the fallback skin doctype is set as "HTML 4 (legacy)" which I think should be correct. There are no updates available for the skin. I did check Snowcovered for the skin (don't know if I should name it) and they say it's compatible with DNN version 5, which is what we have. I have a suppport request into the designer, too, but it appears they're not particulary responsive or active.

This is something I took over last fall, so I'm trying to figure it all out. I'm wondering if there's a way we can fix a CSS style on a downloaded skin, and if so, what I need to fix.

Any insight is appreciated!

Susan,

Skins for DNN4 will work in DNN5 as well, the main difference is in the way the skin is packaged and uploaded. However seeing as version 5 is an upgrade of the framework there are some extra things that can be taken advantage of with regards to skins. An example of this is the menu provider (your skin is using the solpartmenu which isn't actively supported anymore) which can now be rendered as a list of links, making it much easier to work with and more importantly search engine friendly.

At the very basic, skins are a collection of atleast 2 files a skinname.ascx file which contains the HTML code and skin objects, and a skinname.css file with all of the style code. There can also be a skinname.doctype file which sets the doctype for the skin, and it's generally considered good practice to have this set to a XHTML doctype because this tends to sort a lot of minor issues. Ontop of this there can also be a skin.css file which contains shared CSS between multiple skins in a skin pack. All of these are located in either the Portals/_default/Skins/ directory (if it was loaded through the host extensions) or the Portals/"portal number"/Skins directory (If it was loaded through the Admin extensions).

If you need to make changes to the CSS in the skin I'd recommend using the Firebug plugin for Firefox (www.getfirebug.com) to examine the page code and make changes in your browser, and then update the necessary CSS or .ascx files in the skins directory. Remember to make a copy of anything your making changes to so you can revert back if you make any mistakes.

Alternatively you can also add CSS to the Stylesheet Editor in the Admin > Site Settings page which updates the portal.css file, and because this loads last the CSS has precedence.

The first thing I'd recommend doing though is adding a skinname.doctype file to set the Doctype to XHTML. It might be that this will sort the problems for you (http://www.dotnetnuke.com/Community/W...).

Hope this helps,

Rick.

I can't remember if I thanked you yet for your reply. We are looking into your suggestion.

Would we be better off just installing new skins designed for v. 5? Or is that just another can of worms?
