HI,

Is it possible to use an HTML5 visual designer (such as Pingendo) to create the base page for a DNN8 skin, and then modify the files it creates for use with DNN?

I have Visual Studio 2015 too, would it be easier with that?

Have you seen the the bootstrap based skin template Mr. Hammond shared?  If you haven't you might take a look.  You could port in Bootstrap snippets to customize your skin but you could save yourself some time leveraging his work.

You can use any editor you like - a skin is just text.

However some things are a bit easier. DNN is a .net based system and a skin is ultimately an ascx file. Visual Studio is a decent fit for that kind of job. Conversely DNN has specific quirks and I would expect that tools that know nothing about .net and DNN would be harder work.

I read somewhere that ascx files won't be used in DNN 8, is that true?

There are loads of DNN skinning tutorials online, but there are for older versions. Will they still work for DNN 8?

Has anyone used Artiseer to develop skins, or are there any other tools available?

I am using Wordpress, but want to work (and develop) with DNN instead, but I can't find any up to date help online.

ascx files are used in DNN8.

Tutorials that are appropriate for "older" versions of DNN are appropriate for DNN8 and DNN9.

Chris Hammond's tools are up to date, and he updates them regularly. This is both for modules and themes (skins).

You might also want to take a look at the several open source skins that Geoff Barlow has released recently, e.g. http://www.dnnbootster.com/

Taking an existing skin and modifying it for your own use is a great way to get started.

Another option: DNN Summit in January will have a full day of training for theme designers, and there will be several session in the free conference. DNN Connect in May likely will include sessions related to theme development. Attending either of these events will provide an opportunity to meet members of the DNN Community who can be resources to you going forward.
