Well I was pretty fustrated in my last post but have recovered and picked back up trying to learn this thing.
In the DNN Wrox Professional Hello World module example, I couldn't get the text to show up in the module. I put a label in the viewHelloWorld.ascx file and set the text attribute to "Hello World!" It all built successfully. I got the module registered and added it to the left pane. Cool! But now the text doesn't show up.
So then I thought, there is a viewHelloWorld.ascx and editHelloWorld.ascx file. Since I put this in view..ascx maybe I need to switch to the "view" view rather than the "edit" view. The text still doesn't show up.
But I digress as far as this post goes.
So now I move on to Ch13 and an looking at the Event Module example.
It looks like the table fields for Events are a little outdated in the book as compared to what was installed and set up with the 4.5.3 starter kit. Like I think the Description field is now EventDesc. But the stored procedure AddEvent still tries to insert into a field called Description. I think this is because I installed a 3.x.x Event module.
Am I way off base here missing something?

Plus the event module on a page is just buggy an has the text "Please update module settings...contact Portal Admin." in red.

Trying to learn this in bits and pieces but this is the most incredibly difficult thing I've ever tried to learn. Does anyone agree about the learning curve on this?
But its so popular there must be something to it so I'm not giving up yet.

Please don't give up.  I don't have the DNN book you are referring to, actually, I don't have any DNN book.  You have to be careful with the books because they take a while to be written and published and by then the DNN software has moved ahead.  You may be right about the difference in versions.

Have you seen the great tutorials by Michael Washington???  I would recommend you use them, they are here http://www.adefwebserver.com/dotnetnukehelp/.  Look for the "Super-Simple Module" tutorial.
