Hi,

Is there any limit on the no of roles a user can have in DNN?

I am using DNN 4.5.2 framework andhaving this issue,  a particular user has aroun 73 Roles associated.  After adding few more roles ( making it ti around 76 Roles) , the user is unable to log into the system.

The Exception logged is "Inlvalid value for 'encrypted ticket parameter' .

I have  googled and i find mostly that this could be because of cookie issue , i tried clearing all cache , cookies and all temp file on the user machine and treid accesing it still failed.

 how ever if i  delet some roles associated to the user ( it made it come till 73 ) then the user is able to log in , i also checked if its becuase of a specific name in the Role , but it was not so.

Can any one guide me on what could be the issue.

the limit for number of roles is actually the limit of the maximum size of the cookie where roles are stored. Typically cookies cannot be more than 2-4k (depending on browser), so if you have a large number of roles then it's encrypted size would be more than the maximum size of the cookie, meaning the text get's truncated and hence you get an invalid value message. There is no way to work around this without refactoring the roles management to not use cookies, and seeing as this effects so few users (most sites have users with only one or two roles), it's unlikely to be changed, sorry.

We are asking the specfic users to have more than 1 account for themselves and the roles be split betweet the accounts they manage.

Is this 'cookie' based roles system being changed in DNN 5?  The site I'm developing will literally have thousands of roles.

Could it be changed to use the provider pattern where we can supply our own provider?

no, there are no changes implemented or planned (AFAIK) for handling roles.

IMHO a site with thousands of roles needs a redign of concept.
