Hi everyone,

I am wondering how one might move the contents of a store to another server. I have a need where I need to leave one web host company and move to another. But I cannot simply leave all of my sales data, product / category data, images, etc and start fresh. Too much loss and additional work.

Is it as simple as backing up and restoring the content database? Something tells me it's not.

I am also in the process of changing Host account and would like to know what to look out for.
So far I've copied all files from old host to new, and did backup of DB from old host and restore to new host.

I was forced to change user name in the new host, so I'll have to made some alterations in the config file somewhere. Can anyone advise?

Richard, there is no information related to the accounts (admins or superadmin), in the config files. Everything is in the database.

I suspect that Richard is referring to a change in MS SQL database username that was required when restoring the database on the new hosting provider's server. If so, it would be necessary to make that change in the two database connection strings in the site's web.config file. Both connection strings are located near the beginning of web.config. The primary connection string is in the section <connectionStrings> while the legacy connection string is in the section <appSettings>. I would suggest making a backup copy of web.config before making any modifications to it. If you need more details as to how to make these changes, please let us know.

Hi Sam,

This is not directly related to the Store module, to migrate a DNN instance you need a backup of your SQL Server database and a backup of your current website folder.

The main problem is to verify with your new hosting company if then can restore an SQL Server db!

Most of times DNN is installed from an online control panel and the DNN db is created in the background, then you get an access to your website folder via FTP. After those step, your new hosting company should restore your db and provide you informations to connect to the restored db (server name or IP address, SQL Server account name and password). With this informations, you will have to edit your web.config file and replace previous connections strings with the new informations. The last step is to backup localy the current content of your website folder via FTP (just in case you will have to restore the fresh new DNN), then remove all the files and folders and upload your old website folder to your new server.

Another more simple solution, is to provide the SQL Server db backup and a zip file of your current website folder to your new hosting company. With thoses files, they should be able to prepare your new website, then you will have to edit you web.config file via FTP with new db informations.

After several years of services dedicated to the community, I begin to be tired to read requests without any form of politeness.
