I just upgraded my DNN site from 4.3.5 to 4.4.1 and am running into some interesting issues.

Below are the errors I am receiving

When on a page if I try to edit the settings I get an error that says a critical error occured.

When trying to update Site Settings I get the following.

DotNetNuke.Services.Exceptions.ModuleLoadException: Object reference not set to an instance of an object. ---> System.NullReferenceException: Object reference not set to an instance of an object. at DotNetNuke.UI.UserControls.UrlControl.get_Url() at DotNetNuke.Modules.Admin.PortalManagement.SiteSettings.cmdUpdate_Click(Object sender, EventArgs e) --- End of inner exception stack trace ---

When trying to modify Host Settings, I get the following
Error: Host Settings is currently unavailable.
DotNetNuke.Services.Exceptions.ModuleLoadException: Object reference not set to an instance of an object. ---> System.NullReferenceException: Object reference not set to an instance of an object. at DotNetNuke.Modules.Admin.Host.HostSettingsModule.cmdUpdate_Click(Object sender, EventArgs e) --- End of inner exception stack trace ---

I had tested this on 2 development boxes and not had any problems......the only difference is that I enabled compression on the new site.  I have a feeling it might be related.  Is there any way that I can turn off compression without being able to update my host settings??

Hello,
Do you have ftp access to your portal?
If so, try downloading > editing > re-uploading your web.config file

In your web.config file Under <httpModules> section, you'll see
<add name="Compression" type="DotNetNuke.HttpModules.Compression.HttpModule, DotNetNuke.HttpModules.Compression"/>
line, Try removing this line, (You should backup your web.config file first before process)

After removing this line send your web.config file to your ftp. It'll turn off compression.

Hope it helps

It appears to be fixed now, however there appears to be actually two problem points....

First I removed Compression from the web config, but for some reason the application didn't restart.  I was able to restart the application from the host settings.  Doing this I was then able to actually change the drop down to show no compression.

I was still unable to access page settings and site settings from the admin accounts.  This was due to me accidentally setting the page state storage option to "Memory" instead of page.  I have switched that back now and everything appears to be ok...  It is too bad that compression will not work because the site was rocket fast....but oh well!

Thanks for the pointers, I also just noticed one of the other threads about this too..

Try the Free Snapsis PageBlaster  if you want an alternative to the core compression. It not only compresses, but also caches your entire page.
